In March 2010, ETBF and Special Olympics agreed to join a partnership to create more opportunities in the sport for people with intellectual disabilities in Europe. This partnership has existed ever since and it will continue.

ETBF proclaims unanimous support and affinity for Special Olympics and all its bowling athletes, whose courage and efforts on the lanes represents the true spirit of sportsmanship.

Through the partnership, ETBF will endeavor that more and more people, with intellectual disabilities, have the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from bowling.

Areas of co-operation and goals

  • To develop the quality of bowling for Special Olympics athletes by greater involvement of national federations and local clubs
  • To increase public awareness of Special Olympics and people with intellectual disability
  • To raise more funds for the development of Special Olympics Bowling
  • To better integrate Special Olympics into the structures of bowling at European and national levels
  • To offer athletes from Special Olympics to present their skills by playing demonstration games at the main adult ETBF Championships: the European Men Championships and the European Women Championships, of which four are conducted in a four-year cycle.

Bowling is one of the 31 sports, of which Special Olympics offers year round training and competitions.

Special Olympics are working with 500.000 athletes in 58 countries across Europe and Central Asia. Worldwide there are more than 3.2 million athletes with intellectual disabilities across 175 countries.
